They were banned in the U.K. and the U.S. While in Paris he began a famous affair with writer Anais Nin, who documented their exploits in her diaries. Between the 1940s and 1960s Miller settled in Big Sur, California, exhibited water colors and wrote, most notably publishing the trilogy known as The Rosy Crucifixion (the novels Sexus, Plexus and Nexus). Tropic of Cancer is described as cld"totally incoherent; the page-long sentences unwinding like the ramblings of some drunken poet, wandering from meal to meal, drink to drink, from one sexual adventure to the next through the streets of Paris and Brooklynnrd" by Ewan Morrison, author of Meeacute;nage, the story of a modern m eacute;nage fagrave; trois inspired by Henry Miller and his wife June and Anais Nin.

As a writer, Miller is known for blending genres together. Many of his texts which are referred to as “novels” are actually a mixture of fiction, nonfiction, autobiography, social criticism, philosophy, erotica, and fantasy. To further complicate matters, many of his “novels” include a character named “Henry Miller.” This character is generally agreed to be an individual apart from the author rather than simply a fictionalized version of him. Therefore, in discussions of his works, it is important to indicate whether or not the author or the character is being referenced.
