The first of a great bunch of options from Canon is the Canon Ixus 860 IS. As the name suggests it is a very welcome upgrade to the Ixus 850 IS, not because the previous model needed upgrading, but more so because the 850 was such a fantastic camera. The 860 IS has been improved slightly with 8 mega pixels compared to 7.1 mega pixels and has a larger LCD screen at 3 inches rather than the previous 2.5 inches. Other features include a DIGIC III Image Processor, Optical Image Stabilizer and a 3.8x optical zoom. The appearance has stayed relatively the same apart from the loss of the optical view finder and a few of the buttons have jumped to the top of the device rather than on the back. Following our convention of using default factory and best quality JPEG settings to test cameras unless otherwise stated, the 860IS / SD870 IS was set to its best quality Large Superfine JPEG mode, Auto White Balance, Evaluative Metering and with My Colours set to Off. The Image Stabilisation was enabled for all handheld shots, and disabled for tripod-based tests.
