Bless Me Ultima is a coming of age tale about a boy challenged by the spiritual decay of the Mexico around him.  He’s six when Ultima comes to stay with him, and she changes his life.  The story follows in storytelling/ mythical way.  Ultima is the ultimate symbol of past (almost like Emily in Faulkner’s story A Rose For Emily).  She teaches Antonio the ways of the past, with all these sort of granny wise tales.  In the mist of his first communion Antonio is facing spiritual dilemmas regarding who or what he’s suppose to be; he’s sees his brothers, cousins, leading these bad/ get rich quick, lives, and he’s sort of the last hope in the family to become a priest and make something of himself.

Antonio refers to the presence or the soul of the river. He believes the river is animated by an ancient soul that watches out for the people that come to it. This belief comes from the religion of the Aztecs. He learns more about it from Jas oacute;n and from Ultima. When he thinks he hears Lupito asking him to bless him before he dies, Antonio repeats the Act of Contrition, but he despairs of anyone's ability to wash the blood of murder from the river. Here again, Anaya describes a syncretism between Catholicism and Native American religion. Antonio begins his path toward becoming a priest, whether it will be a priest of the Catholic Church is yet to be seen.
