fish tank aeration

What, in essence, happens is that green plants take in carbon dioxide during the hours of daylight for the food-building process known as photosynthesis, a by product of which is oxygen. When this happens in full light it generates more oxygen than a plant requires for respiration and the excess is released. At night, the plant needs to respire and take in oxygen and emit carbon dioxide. If the tank is not kept lit for extended periods then the plants will use more oxygen then they emit and actually restrict supply to the plant. This is where aeration is essential for the fish to survive.
