I have since decided to implement the method of universal joints and a skate bearing for the handle. I am currently waiting for these ordered parts to arrive before I write up Part 2 of my DIY Steadicam Merlin Project. As for now, here is a photo of my current system against a 30cm ruler and a photo of the contraption held by a screwdriver at its center of gravity (without a handle).
