@thewronggrape: It1's a solid deal. You go pick out a movie (mostly new releases but some redboxes will have random throwbacks). Each movie costs $1 per night, with a return time of 9 PM (in Minnesota at least). Each day you have to movie past 9 PM, it charges $1 to whichever card you swipe originally at the machine. Retruning DVDs is a simple process. Overall a great innovation and a lot cheaper and easier than renting from the video store. Hardest part is choosing which movie to rent!

@thewronggrape: All movies are a buck a night. When you rent a movie, you use your debit or credit card and ite's charged when you return the movie ($1 for 1 night, $2 for 2 nights, etc.). You can also return it to any redbox location; this makes it perfect for renting while travelling. I use them all the time, and my only complaint is that the people who rent the dvds before me don 't always take good care of them - I often have to clean the dvd before watching it.

Why study DVDs and not VHS movies? Two reasons, the study noted. DVDs are priced to sell in the $10 to $25 range compared to VHS tapes, which can cost as much as $100. And given the scenario we model, both options -- renting and buying -- have to be available at the same time for the choice to be legitimate. DVDs are most commonly released for rental and purchase simultaneously, whereas VHS tapes are more often released sequentially.
