The actual tint is determined by the concentration of the atoms in the carbon lattice within the stone itself.

With new technology colorless diamonds and even synthetics can be forced to mimic chocolate diamonds. Some companies take a low grade, natural diamond and expose it to radiation. This changes the atoms within the stone and causes a change in color. These treated diamonds are less expensive than natural colored diamonds. That may seem like a good thing but they have very little resale value.

Since the chocolate diamonds can be manufactured it is important to work with someone that you can trust. Always be sure to get the proper certification from the seller. It should contain the area of origin of the stone as well as whether the stone was naturally colored or treated.
