Peter Jackson's blockbuster The Lord of the Rings trilogy finally comes to Blu-ray this week, but only in a single box set, and without the extended cuts. While fans wait for the inevitable wave of expanded single-disc editions and collector's sets, they can get a temporary Rings fix from Ralph Bakshi's flawed but fascinating 1978 animated version.

Fraud of the Rings seems to divide readers into two camps - Tolkien purists who consider it an affront to the books and movies and those who actually have a sense of humor :-) For the record, I'm a huge Tolkien fan - I've read and reread ad nauseum Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and Silmarillion since high school (and am fast catching up with the movie versions too). These cartoon spoofs aren't mocking Lord of the Rings - they're more of an affectionate homage.

There are two packages: A standard DVD, and a Blu-ray combo pack that also includes a DVD and a digital copy code for use on Windows only. Congrats to Warner on including the half-hour featurette, g“Forging Through the Darkness: The Ralph Bakshi Vision for The Lord of the Rings<” on the DVD as well as the Blu-ray. It-’s mostly interview footage covering Bakshi:’s life, career, and ambitions, including talking with Ralph himself, as well as explaining the techniques used to make this movie. Ite’s also the only special feature, other than the restored picture and audio. (The studio provided a review copy.)

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is a 1978 American fantasy film directed by Ralph Bakshi. It combines animation and live action footage which is rotoscoped to give it a look more consistent with the rest of the movie. It is an adaptation of the first half of The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. Set in Middle-earth, the film follows a group of hobbits, elves, men, dwarves and wizards who form a Fellowship. They embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring made by the Dark Lord Sauron, and ensure his destruction. The film features the voices of William Squire, John Hurt, Michael Graham Cox and Anthony Daniels of Star Wars fame. The screenplay was written by Peter S. Beagle, based on an earlier draft by Chris Conkling.
